Basketball in England is structured in the following way:

International Teams

Great Britain operates combined senior teams, run by "British Basketball". For some competitions, such as the Commonwealth Games, the Home Nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland may enter seperate teams. Junior International teams are still run by the seperate National Bodies.

Professional Leagues

There is one professional mens league in the UK, "The BBL". There are currently no professional leagues for women at this time.

National Leagues
The National Governing Body "England Basketball" run National Leagues for men, women and juniors. Some teams at the higher end may be Semi Professional, but in the main players are amateur. Senior teams usually have to be of a certain standard to enter, but there are no such stipulations for junior teams. England Basketball also organise the "Founders Cup", a competition for strong Local League teams who do not want the commitment of National League. A number of Hertfordshire clubs enter these competitions.

Local Leagues
These are usually run by Area Assocations or other groups of volunteers. There is one local league for men in Hertfordshire, the "Herts Premier League". This consists of a number of teams from Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties.

For women, there is a central venue league at Stevenage every Sunday during the season. Contact the organiser, Dave Pollard, at dave.pollard@romec.co.uk for more information.

There is currently one junior local league operating inside Hertfordshire, a monthly U17 league at Rosyton, and a number of Herts based teams also enter leagues in nearby areas such as Harlow and Aylesbury. Most junior clubs currently choose to enter the National Leagues.

Schools, Universities and College have their own competitions, some of which are affiliated to England Basketball.
